Milford Powerboat Poker Run 2012
September 8, 2012

RECAP

An absolutely fantastic event... and only 3 boats finished the course!!
Milford Harbor and the Indigo by the Water Restaurant set such a fabulous scene by hosting this event that all of the contestants just could not leave.

Truth be told, the inclement weather permitted the event to go on, but the 6 to 8 foot seas prevented most of the fleet from getting to checkpoint number 1.
Johnny O'Loughlin came across the sound from Long Island on Saturday morning and warned us of rough sea conditions, but the sun was out and the rain stopped.  We all voted to do the poker run. As the checkpoint boats took their positions and tried to set their anchors, they radioed in and said it is very rough 6 to 8 footers.   Our triangular 60 mile course was all set and we all voted to do the run!
After a brief drivers meeting the parade out of the harbor began. Once we cleared the point and passed 5 mph marker, we dropped the GREEN Flag signifying the official start. Only 3 boats passed the Paceboat.  IT WAS 6-8 FOOTERS!
Johhny O'Loughlin in his 48 MTI Cat, Sal Albanese in his 35 Fountain, and Gino in his 35 Formula all took off and made it to Port Jeff/Checkpoint No. 1 where Joe Filanowski in his 43 Viking, Green Machine was waiting.  All 3 boats made it there, but the rest of the fleet circled back to the dock and drew their cards from the dockside dealer. Nobody made it to the offshore checkpoint with Ron and Mark who heroically made it to Branford to be Checkpoint no. 2 in a 21' Bayliner Bowrider(!)  and nobody came! We salute Ron & Mark as the unsung heroes of the day! We also salute all of the captains who were wise enough to turn around their crafts and play poker on the dock. Smart move!  SAFETY FIRST!
