Seaport Inn & Marina "Buzzard's Bay" Powerboat Poker Run 2010
September 6, 2010
When Buzzard’s Bay gets its “Buzz” from Storm Earl, you do not want to be on her in a speedboat…nor any other boat I can think of. So that is what the National Powerboat Association did on Saturday, Sept 4th and Sunday, Sept 5th, while Storm Earl whipped up the bay. The powerboat poker runners stayed on-shore and enjoyed the 5 bands, car show, and the scenery provided by the Seaport Inn and Marina complex in Fairhaven Mass/New Bedford Harbor.
Fortunately Monday was a holiday and the fleet took to the water at 12 noon.
Dan DeSantis pulled to the front of the fleet in his 40 Skater SS with twin Sterling 1550 HPs and Merc #6 Speedmasters, on the way to Cuddy Hunk for Card Number 1 . Dan Dropski piloted Robert Bowman’s 37 Outerlimits with twin 900 HPs to the lead after Dan’s Skater experienced engine difficulties. Following close behind was the Sutphen Team of Ernie Dupuis in “Boxer”, a 31 Sutphen powered by an 572/850 HP and Ken Kleitz’s “Tsunami”, a 33 Sutphen with twin 5oo HPs. Not far behind came Gene Manzone in his 24 Banana Boat with a Merc 454/365 HP package.
The fleet took a short pause at checkpoint no 2 in Wood’s Hole at Bob Bowman’s Houseboat. From there they moved onto Mattapoisett harbor for a card and then to Earl’s Marina for another brief stop over. The final leg went to Padanaram
Harbor and then back to the Seaport Inn and Marina for the final card.
The big winner of the day was Gene Manzone because he had the Best hand that paid $1,250.00 and the 2nd best hand that paid $750.00. 3rd place was won by Shawn Bannister and he received $500.00.
Peter Nopper won the 4’Trophy “SPIRIT OF THE NPBA”, thanks to all of his help in organizing the logistics of the course and boats.
KING OF THE CATS Trophy went to Dan DeSantis in his SKATER.
KING OF THE V-BOTTOMS went to Bob Bowman’s 37 Outerlimits, “Stiletto”.
BEST LOOKING CREW went to Ernie Dupuis’s Team BOXER.
BEST LOOKING BOAT went to Bob Bowman’s “Stiletto”.
As Storm Earl left town, so did the poker run teams…all looking forward to next year’s event on Buzzard’s Bay and the wonderful hospitality of the staff at the Seaport Inn and Marina in Fairhaven, Mass.
